Nigeria
Since 2016, these two nations have met five times, and in four of those matches both teams managed to score, showing that their encounters are often competitive and open once the game state changes.
Algeria have approached this tournament in a cautious and pragmatic manner, frequently playing without a natural No. 9. Maza has been deployed in the striker role, but this setup has reduced their attacking efficiency and limited their intent to commit numbers forward. Unless Algeria significantly change their approach by introducing a more traditional striker such as Bounedjah, their ability to consistently threaten will remain questionable.
Nigeria, on the other hand, represent a much higher attacking level than Algeria’s previous opponents. They have been the most dangerous attacking side at this AFCON so far and remain the only team to score four goals in a single match during the tournament. With pace, power, and multiple goal threats, Nigeria have the tools to punish even small defensive mistakes.
We expect Nigeria to take the initiative and look for an early breakthrough. If that happens, Algeria will be forced out of their defensive structure, something they have been reluctant and uncomfortable doing throughout the tournament.
What we say
Nigeria to Qualify
Nigeria’s superior attacking quality, depth, and experience in high-pressure matches give them a clear edge in this matchup. Algeria’s lack of attacking intent and reliance on a conservative setup make it difficult to see them sustaining pressure over 90 minutes or beyond. In a tight and tactical contest, Nigeria’s firepower should be the decisive factor in securing qualification.
